Top Story: Fatal Shootings in Massapequa Park - Details Released by the Nassau County Police Department
The N.C. Police Department Public Information Office reports the details of two fatal shootings that occurred in MassapequaPark on Saturday, March 12th, 2011 at 8:13 PM. According to detectives, police were called for a suspicious person with weapons walking in the vicinity of Front Street in MassapequaPark. Responding officers confronted the subject eastbound on Front Street where he fled on foot to the residence at 5 Fourth Street. The subject barricaded himself inside a room at that location. Officers entered the residence, called for assistance and evacuated the occupants of the house. During this time the suspect suddenly emerged from the room with a knife and lunged at the officers. The officers discharged their weapons fatally shooting the subject and he succumbed to his wounds at the scene.
A responding NassauCounty officer assigned to the Bureau of Special Operations was at scene and was struck by gunfire as result of an accidental shooting. That officer was transported to NassauUniversityMedicalCenter.
With deepest sympathy the Nassau County Police Department has identified Police Officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf 40, a 12 year veteran of the force as the officer who succumbed to his injury sustained at the aforementioned incident. Police Officer Breitkopf was pronounced deceased at NassauUniversityMedicalCenter shortly after 9:15PM.
The suspect who was fatally wounded has been identified as Anthony Digeronimo 21, of 5 Fourth AvenueMassapequa Park.
